The Village:
The village of Basarbovo is located in Ruse District and belongs to Municipality Ruse. Distance to city of Ruse is 10 km. It looks as if Basarbovo is nestled in the valley, as it is surrounded by hills on all sides.
Rusenski Lom River passes through the valley and around it an incredibly beautiful canyon was formed, which is like a miniature of the world-famous Grand Canyon in the USA. Standing on top of the rocks one is given the chance to enjoy a breath-taking view.
Basarbovo was inhabited from antiquity. At first its location was a bit more north-west, but after being burnt to ashes by the Turks, it moved to its present one. The village is named after St. Dimitar Basarbovski, who lived in the 18th century. He is the patron of Bucharest, where his relics lie. The famous rock monastery, located in the village and operating from Antiquity, is named after him
The Municipality
The city of Ruse is the largest Bulgarian city on the Danube River, one of the major centres of economy in the country and a natural gateway to Europe, Russia and the Near East. It is situated in the north-eastern part of Bulgaria, at a distance of approximately 300 km from the capital city of Sofia. It is the centre of the Northern Central Planning Region.
The geographic location of the Municipality Ruse, the substantial industrial and trade facilities and the good transport connections are among its key advantages. Its wide outlet on the Danube is a precondition for the overall development of industry, agriculture, transport and cross-border cooperation. Its location is favourable also owing to the two European transport corridors No. 7 and No. 9, which cross each other there and ensure the connection of the Municipality with the Baltic and Northern Sea areas, as well as with the Mediterranean and Black Sea. The only bridge (till now 2010) over the Danube on the territory of Bulgaria for the time being is in Ruse city, Ruse Municipality.
The rich cultural and historical heritage of Ruse and the adjacent region, the Danube River and the nature in the land along the river provide opportunities for creating a specialized tourist product, which meets the requirements and modern trends in tourism.
The District
Ruse Region includes a part of the hilly Danube Plain, the Danube riverside plain of Pobrezhie and part of Ludogorie lowlands. It is bounded by the regions of Silistra, Razgrad, Targovishte and Veliko Tarnovo, and borders Romania to the north with the Danube River as a boundary. Some of the big rivers are the Yantra and the Rusenski Lom.
The region is important for the national transport system. The Danube River is linked through the European waterway system with the Mein and the Rhine rivers and connects the North Sea with the Black Sea. The first railroad line in Bulgaria – Ruse–Varna, built in 1866, crosses the region. Important roads and railways connect the region with the rest of the country and the only bridge over the Danube on Bulgarian territory connects the country with Romania. The middle point of the bridge marks the boundary between the two countries.
Landmarks: Protected areas on the territory of the region include the Rusenski Lom Nature Park, which comprises the picturesque canyon of the river valley, rock formations near the villages of Pisanets and Mechka, and the Orlova Chuka Cave.
Vestiges of prehistoric life in the region have been found in the Orlova Chuka Cave and in the mound of Ruse. Thracians, living in the area around the 4th c. BC, have left about 250 mounds. The Thracian silver treasure, discovered near the village of Borovo, known as the Ruse Treasure, is notable for the fine skilful decoration of animals’ figures and mythological scenes.
The castles built during the Roman times to defend the Danube frontier include Sexaginta Prista (near Ruse), Yatrus (near the village of Krivina), Tigra (near Marten), etc. The rock churches of Ivanovo are notable cultural landmarks of the region and they are included in the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage. Other point of interest is The Medieval Fortress of Cherven and Basarbovo’s Rock Churches.
In the 19th century Ruse is the gate for the European cultural influence on Bulgarian lands. The preserved patterns of urban architecture are among the most attractive and stylish throughout the country.
